Frequently asked
Hardwood vs poly plantation shutters — which is right for my Austin home?
Hardwood (basswood) for everywhere but bathrooms, kitchens, mudrooms, and laundry rooms — the warmth, weight, and grain make a real difference visually. Premium poly for the wet rooms — it won't warp or stain from humidity, and the modern poly looks indistinguishable from painted wood at arm's length. Most Austin homes end up mixed.
How long do plantation shutters last?
Properly installed hardwood shutters last 20–30+ years. The louvers operate, the frame stays square, the finish holds. What fails on cheap shutters is the cheap stuff — MDF cores that swell, plastic hinges that crack, paint that peels in Austin sun. We use materials that don't do any of that.
Can plantation shutters fit my bay window / arched window / French door?
Yes. Bay windows we build with custom return frames so each panel meets the next at the exact angle of your bay. Arched tops we build as separate panels that integrate with the rectangular shutters below. French doors and sliding doors we build slim-profile shutters that don't interfere with the handle. We've never seen a window shape we couldn't build for.
How long does the build + install take?
Four to six weeks from consultation to installed. The variance comes from material — premium poly ships faster (4 weeks), custom-stained hardwood takes longer (5–6 weeks). Standard white hardwood lands in the middle. We build everything in our Texas workshop and give you a firm date during the consultation, not a 'sometime in the next 8 weeks' range.
Will shutters block too much light?
Only if you keep the louvers closed. Open louvers let in more light than blinds because there's no fabric or pull-cord to block it — just air and the frame. Most Austin clients use shutters partially open during the day for filtered light and tilted closed at night for privacy.
How much do plantation shutters cost in Austin?
Roughly $300–$500 per window depending on material — premium poly (for wet rooms) ~$250–$400, basswood hardwood ~$350–$500. A typical 6-window project lands around $2,000–$3,000; whole-home (16+ windows) typically runs $5,600–$12,000. Specialty shapes (bay, half-round, arched, French doors) are priced individually.
What's covered by the lifetime warranty?
Frame, finish, hinges, and louvers — all lifetime against manufacturer defect and our installation. If a panel warps, a hinge fails, or the finish chips because of how we installed or built it, we replace it at no charge. Storm damage and intentional damage aren't covered.
