THE CRAFT · HEADINGS How the top is finished The heading decides how a panel folds, how it moves and how much of the window it covers when open. RENDERED CONCEPT Pinch pleat Fabric gathered into tailored pleats and tacked at the base. Hangs on rings or hooks; the classic, structured look. RENDERED CONCEPT Ripplefold Continuous, even waves on a ceiling or wall track. Clean and modern; glides smoothly and suits motorization. RENDERED CONCEPT Grommet Metal rings set into the fabric slide straight onto the rod, forming deep, relaxed folds. RENDERED CONCEPT Rod pocket The rod runs through a sewn pocket and the fabric gathers along it. Soft and traditional; best for panels that stay put. THE CRAFT 04

THE CRAFT · FINISHING Lining, hems & hardware What you don't see decides how a panel hangs for years: the lining behind it, the hem at the floor and the hardware that carries it. RENDERED CONCEPT Lining Unlined panels filter light. Lined panels hold their shape and add privacy. Blackout lining is for bedrooms and media rooms. RENDERED CONCEPT Holdbacks & tiebacks Holdbacks are wall-mounted pieces that hold a panel open or replace a rod. Tiebacks gather the panel — tassel or matching fabric. THE CRAFT 05

THE CRAFT · FABRIC Choosing your fabric Fabric choice is the single most important decision when ordering drapes. We bring swatches to your home so you can see each option in your own light. Stationary Drapery & Functional Sheer Panels Five Three-Section Panels Two Stationary Panels with Holdbacks & Tassel Tieback Double-Layered Functional Panels & Sheer Close-ups from installations in this book. Weight & feel Lightweight linen and cotton feel relaxed and airy. Heavier velvet and silk add formality to dining rooms and primary bedrooms. Performance fabrics Made to resist fading, moisture and staining — a good fit for homes with children, pets or sun-drenched windows. Light filtering or blackout Sheers soften daylight and keep privacy by day. Blackout lining shuts out light for bedrooms and media rooms. Layering A sheer for daytime privacy with a heavier drape for evening — or drapery over blinds or shades for full light control. Lining for heat Thermal linings slow heat transfer in summer. On sunny south- and west-facing windows, choose a light color with a white thermal backing. Sun and fading Performance polyester blends and solution-dyed acrylics resist UV fading best. READING THIS BOOK What the labels mean Stationary / Functional Stationary panels stay where they are and frame the window. Functional panels travel on the rod and close over the glass. Heading How the top of the panel is finished: pinch pleat, ripplefold, grommet, rod pocket — or hung from holdbacks with no rod at all. Two- and three-section panels A panel sewn from two or three fabrics in horizontal bands. Useful on very tall windows to keep the drop in proportion. Lining Unlined panels filter light. Lined panels hold their shape and add privacy. Blackout lining is for bedrooms and media rooms. Holdbacks & tiebacks Holdbacks are wall-mounted pieces that hold a panel open or replace a rod. Tiebacks gather the panel — tassel or matching fabric. Top treatments Valances are soft fabric; cornice boards are upholstered wood. Both hide hardware and finish the top of the window. About the prices. Each price is for the project pictured — its window sizes, fabric and hardware. Your price depends on your windows and choices; we quote it after measuring. About the materials. QUESTIONS WE HEAR Before you choose How long should drapes be? They should just barely touch the floor, or puddle 1–2 inches for a softer look. We hang rods 4–6 inches above the frame and 3–6 inches past each side. Can drapes help with the Texas heat? Yes. Thermally lined drapes slow heat coming through the glass. Choose a light color with a white thermal backing on south- and west-facing windows; blackout lining insulates most. What fabric holds up in a sunny room? Performance polyester blends and solution-dyed acrylics resist fading best. If you love linen or cotton, we add a UV-protective lining. Can drapes be motorized? Yes.
